George Albert Harbrow was born at Naree
Warren, Dandenong, Australia on 9 May 1904 shortly before the
family emigrated to New Zealand. In fact the trip to New
Zealand had to be delayed for his mother Harriett on account of
the birth, so Albert (George's father) came over first.
George was the eldest in a family of four. The family
settled in North East Valley where George's father operated a
carrying business and a coal yard. George went to North East
Valley school and, on leaving, was presented with a medal of
continuous attendance, he having never missed a days schooling.
His son Graeme now proudly wears the medal. After leaving
school, George strangely enough suffered from ill health through
most of his early teens caused by an ulcerated stomach.
George
took a job with the Post & Telegraph Department and headed up
to Central Otago installing phone lines to Wanaka and Lake Hawea.
While he was working around Queenstown, he met Hazel Barnett and
they later married in Dunedin. That was in 1932. The
couple bought a Dairy in Dunedin, at the Gardens, which they owned
till 1939 when they bought a poultry farm out at Mosgiel. To
make ends meet, George also worked at the freezing works while
Hazel tended to the hens. They lived on the poultry farm
until George died in 1965 at the age of 61.
Always a mild
mannered man, he was never known to raise his voice or lose his
temper. His children, Marian and Graeme must have tried his
patience sorely in their younger years. Details of their
family are :
