Albert James Harbrow was born on 5 Aug 1877 at
Naree Warren near Dandenong. He was the second child in a
family of seven children. He would have gone to school at
Naree Warren and worked on the family farm. The family were
at this time reasonably comfortable, his parents Ezekiel and
Harriet having worked hard to establish their farm and made a good
living from the contracting and cartage work which the family
did. But, as Albert grew up, hard times were starting to
bite and work for the young lads was getting harder to find.
Albert's younger brother John William had heard of work in
Dunedin, New Zealand building the new tramway system and in
January 1904 he decided to make the trip over to check it out.
It looked good, so John called his other brothers over to give it
a go. Albert arrived in Dunedin on the 'Moeraki' on 25 Jul
1904. Ada followed later with their new baby George on a
later sailing of the Moeraki, which arrived at Bluff on 26 October
1904. Other members of the family also came across. It
wasn't long before John saw a business opportunity in running a
coal yard and so the brothers pitched in as well. Some time
later, Albert decided to open up his own coal yard and carrying
business in North East Valley and so they settled in a house at 6
Selwyn Street close by. They added to their family with Pat
born in 1907 and Linda born in 1910. Some years later,
Arthur came along as
well. |
